This was by far the best learning experience I’ve had
— 2016 Freedom Summer Student

Attention High School Students!

Sign up for Freedom Summer Collegiate and earn college credit, improve your ACT score, and get a taste of the college experience! Classes meet daily at our partner sites for four weeks during the summer. If you're a rising sophomore, junior, or senior who wants to participate in a life-changing summer experience, sign up! Our courses are free!

What We Teach

If you aren't yet sure where you want to go to college, what you want to study, or what kinds of careers you might be interested in, we're here to help! Our courses will give you a taste of the exciting opportunities ahead. Students who participate in our program have the chance to take two classes: one in the humanities (like English, History, or Philosophy), and one in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). These are not general survey courses, though. Instead, they give you a chance to experience the kind of specific, in-depth learning that happens at the college level. You might learn about the ins and outs of U.S.-Chinese diplomacy, or you might learn about genetic engineering. You might learn about human rights law or psychological disorders. Your teachers will be Ph.D. candidates who are working on exciting new theories, so you might even learn something nobody else has learned before! For a taste of what kinds of courses we offer, check out last year's course catalog

Gain College Credit

Thanks to a partnership with Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, our courses offer college credit for students who complete each course with a final grade of a B- or higher. That means you could earn college credit hours this summer! Whether or not you've begun the college process, this experience will give you an important leg up.

IMPROVE YOUR ACT SCORE

We know how important the ACT is to the college admission process, but we don't want you to have to spend your summer just doing test-taking drills. Our teachers are trained to weave relevant ACT strategies and concepts into fascinating lessons, which means that as you're learning about engineering, psychology, or philosophy, you'll also gain the skills to knock the ACT out of the park!

All of the courses that our teaching fellows design and teach will be available for free to download here! Check out some of the great courses that were offered in past summers!

I believe that these summer classes are helpful because you have a feel for college without actually going to college . . . These classes are just like college classes but you have room for mistakes, you have room for error . . . You can come back next year and be a better student overall.
